Record high for Greece’s Marble Blocks and Slabs exports in 2017


During the last years, Greece is becoming one of the largest exporters of marble blocks and slabs in the world. In 2017, there was a record high in value, quantity and price per tonne.

Stonenews.eu, after collecting and studying the statistical reports of the International Trade Centre and the National Statistical Services, is presenting the growth in Greece’s Marble Blocks & Slabs exports between 2016 and 2017 as well as the shares in value and quantity of exports in 2017.

From 2001 to 2017, Greece has been rapidly increasing marble blocks and slabs exports. More specifically, from 2001 to 2017, the value of exports rose by +902%, the quantity by +361.4% and the price per tonne by +117.3%.

In 2017, Greece surpassed any other record high they achieved in value, quantity and price per tonne of marble blocks and slabs exports. More specifically, between 2016 and 2017, Greece increased the price per tonne by +17.01%, the value of exports by +82.56% and the quantity by +56.03%.

The main reason for the increasing of exports is China, which absorbs more than 80% of the marble blocks and slabs exported by Greece.

The following table presents the top ten destinations of Greece’s marble blocks and slabs, according to the shares in export value of 2017.

As shown at the table, in 2017, compared to 2016, Greece exported Marble Blocks & Slabs in higher price per tonne to Chinese Taipei by +61.83%, to India by +26,89%, to Cyprus by +22.63%, to China by +19.09%, to Malaysia by 13.17%, to Hong Kong by +11.06%, to Italy by +9.84%, to Thailand by +8.88% and to Algeria by +1.35%. Spain was the only country to which Greece exported in lower price per tonne by -27.25%.

In 2017, Greece exported Marble Blocks & Slabs to 68 countries. 93% of the value of exports was under HS Code 251511*, 6.8% under code 251512* and the rest 0.2% under code 251520*.

 

*The statistics are derived by the following HS Codes (Harmonized System Codes):

251511: Marble and travertine, crude or roughly trimmed

251512: Marble and travertine, merely cut, by sawing or otherwise, into blocks or slabs of a square or rectangular shape

251520: Ecaussine and other calcareous monumental or building stone of an apparent specific gravity of >= 2,5, and alabaster, whether or not roughly trimmed or merely cut, by sawing or otherwise, into blocks or slabs of a square or rectangular shape (excluding in the form of granules, chippings or powder, and marble and travertine)
